The boy in the striped pajamas

Where is 'Outwith' and who is Bruno? How is he connected? Soon he will meet the boy in striped pyjamas and befriend him. But why must the boy stay behind the wire?

  2. Ilove how this book is written from a little boy's perspective, without realizing the importance of this situation. He's really lovable! I really enjoyed this book, and definately recommend it.

  3. I'm sorry to say I did not like this book. It was incredibly unrealistic. My biggest problem: No German child would mix up English words and derive the improper meanings from them as given in the text, when they heard and spoke German. The little puns the author created with these mistakes were clever but complete fantasy. A good book if you don't think too much about what you're reading.

  4. This book is an easy read, on a really tough subject.
I thought that the idea was incredible: the story of the son of the Nazi soldier who was in charge of a concentration camp.
It was a really interesting story, and I would definitely recommend it.

  6. I didn't like the story. It didn't take too long, but I found the entire thing rather boring. The ending was brutal and seemed rather sudden, though thinking about it, maybe it was a long time coming because the father never let the boy know anything. It had some stronger aspects but most of it was not enjoyable for me. - Lisa (WCHS)

  7. It was interesting to read a book about the Holocaust from the perspective of a young child, and that a German(!) child. I had heard a lot about it and it was not as great as I expected but it was still a good read.

  10. I liked this book a lot because it makes us look at people who may have a different religion differently. In this book it teaches me a lot, like when Bruno went to the camp even though no one in his household didn't allowed him. Burno didnt listen to his parents and the people that live/ work in his house. It can teach us a lot in life.

  12. I didn't like this story at all. I thought that it was poorly written and that the little boy was far too naive for his age. The whole plot line really bothered me.

  13. The plot for this book and they way it was written was very creative on the author's part. However, I found that since the reader sees the situation from the boy's perspective, and the boy is so naive and doesn't understand what's going on, the reader can't percept when the climax is coming or going. Honestly, I thought the book was just getting exciting when I realized that there were only three pages left, which made the ending very predictable. Another thing that confused me was how this german kid could hear german words and give them improper english meanings when they spoke german anyways, like Bethany said. Many people have said that they hated the ending, but I don't mind a bad ending as long as the author somehow makes the ending for a reason or to state a point. When the author of this book cleared up the ending by showing how the boy's father figured out what happened and felt regretful and sorry, it made the ending make sense. Now I'm just getting confusing so I'll finish this comment: I didn't mind this book although it could have been thought out better.

  16. An interesting story with a sad ending that gives a bit of a look at how the Jews were treated and how that impacted some people.

  17. I thought the book was well written (from the little kid's point of view) but i didn't really like the actual story. The ending was way too depressing!!

  19. I definitely loved this book. The mystery of it and the perspective of the writing. It was a beautifully tragic book, the ending especially. I am very interested in WWII and I love reading books about it. I have read other books based on WWII, and this was one of the top ones.

  20. I'm sorry to say I didn't really enjoy this book. The characters did not seem very realistic and I did not enjoy that the first half of the book was just Bruno complaining about moving. In general, the character of Bruno bothered me. I found he was too ignorant of what was going on. All he cared about was himself and was not aware of the horrid events that happened in the concentration camp with Shmuel.
