Acceleration by Graham McNamee

It’s a hot, hot summer, and in the depths of the Toronto Transit Authority’s Lost and Found, 17-year-old Duncan is cataloging lost things and sifting through accumulated junk. And between Jacob, the cranky old man who runs the place, and the endless dusty boxes overflowing with stuff no one will ever claim, Duncan’s just about had enough. Then he finds a little leather book. It’s a diary filled with the dark and dirty secrets of a twisted mind, a serial killer stalking his prey in the subway. And Duncan can’t make himself stop reading.

What would you do with a book like that? How far would you go to catch a madman?

And what if time was running out. . . .

  2. This book was pretty intense. the end was amazing. My favourite part is at the end when they sneak into the pool and vinny finally goes swimming. when duncan was in the hospital I kept expexting him to wake up.

  3. I found this book really good. I love it was written in "teenage language". It made it very easy to read. However, I didn't really like the ending. I found it disappointing. But overall, it was a good book.

  4. An alright book. I found Duncan's hatred toward the police a little disconcerting. What is the reader supposed to take from that?
The use of Roach's diary within the story, however, was clever and kept things interesting.

  7. Quick read, really easy to get into. The suspense keeps you reading. I liked the idea of "Roach", but I found the end completely anti-climatic. I also liked the conflict in Duncan himself with his guilt. - Rhianne (WCHS)

  8. I thought this book was very well written and I absolutely could not put it down, I just had to keep reading it although the end was rather disappointing on how they covered up the story and called it just an average mugging. I thought the title also fit the book well after seeing the description given in the novel of what acceleration is. - Lisa (WCHS)

  9. This book was quite the page turner. I totally get them some of you are saying that the end was not entirely satisfying. But still, it was a good read.

  12. this book was a pretty good book. I still don't understand why the serial killer didn't come into the book sooner. I think that is what made the book interesting. Some parts of the book i couldn't stop reading.

  15. This was a short and easy read, yet thrilling and suspense-filled book,I also thought there should have been more to the plot, but still a great read.

  16. I didn't like reading the same thing or moment by 5 min. It is true that it was an amazing idea for a story but I felt that sometimes the writer was just writing to fill the book.

  17. I enjoyed reading it as it was very suspenseful, but at the end I felt like there was nothing there and that it was written only for the suspense.

  21. Right away Acceleration captured my attention!
Murder mysteries are always interesting to read about when they are fake. The ending though was a big disapointment for me. I kind of in a way feel sorry for the serial killer. He had a hard life!

  24. I liked this book. It was very easy to get through and the suspense made it intriguing. However, I didn't like the ending, but i did like the idea of the journal. Over all, it was very good.

  25. This book was definately not something I would read if I did not feel obligated by book club. The idea of the journal was a good way to capture the reader's interest, and indeed it caught mine too, but I never was one for this type of book. Putting that aside though, I felt this fast-paced novel was good in terms of perspectives, and I had a good laugh at the not-so-smart things that Wayne and Duncan did. This book also got me thinking of what I would do if I was in Duncan's shoes. I am still unsure, and I don't think I could change that unless something like that happened to me. But please don't think I'm hoping that will happen to me...

  27. Good book. The main character is a little too determined to hunt down some mysterious killer though.

  28. there was absolutely no ending to the book. i mean why search for so long just to get him hit by a subway?!?!? :(
